Oshidori Kakushi Falls – Hidden Beauty in Chino, Nagano

Oshidori Kakushi Falls flowing through lush green forest in Chino, Nagano, Japan.

We came across Oshidori Kakushi Falls almost by chance while exploring Mishaka Ike Pond in Chino, Nagano on a summer trip. The two are connected by a steep road that drops about 300 meters through thick forest. You can walk between them if you don’t mind the climb, or drive down to the bottom, where an old Meiji-era onsen still stands. It looked like it might still be operating, though we didn’t check during our visit.

We parked near the middle section between the pond and the falls and followed a narrow trail into the trees. The sound of water grew stronger until the forest opened to reveal the cascades—layered, green, and surprisingly peaceful. The falls aren’t especially tall, but the flow over smooth rock and the soft spray in the air give the spot a quiet rhythm. It’s easy to linger there for a few minutes just listening to the water and watching light filter through the cedar branches.

Together with Mishaka Ike Pond, Oshidori Kakushi Falls makes an easy and satisfying short stop in Chino. The pond reflects the surrounding forest like a painting, while the falls bring the same calm landscape to life with movement and sound. It’s a nice pairing—one still and one alive—that captures the slower pace of this part of Nagano.

If you’re following the Tateshina onsen circuit, it’s an easy side stop, and you’ll find a few rustic inns and baths nearby. The whole area feels like a place that hasn’t changed much in decades—quiet, understated, and best experienced without a plan.
